Protecting Vulnerable Children
Childhood should be a time of safety, love, and stability. Unfortunately, not every child in our community experiences that. Some grow up facing neglect, abuse, family conflict, or circumstances that put their wellbeing and development at serious risk. At J&IS, protecting these children is one of our most important responsibilities.
How Family Guardianship Helps
Our Family Guardianship Department works closely with families to ensure that a child’s safety and best interests always come first. This work begins with careful assessment: understanding what is happening within a household, identifying risks, and determining what kind of support is needed. In many cases, our team works directly with parents, offering guidance, resources, and practical strategies to help them create a safer and more stable environment for their children.
A Community-Wide Effort
We also collaborate closely with schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations, because protecting a child’s wellbeing rarely falls to one person or one department alone. It takes a coordinated effort, with everyone involved sharing information, expertise, and support to build the strongest possible safety net around a child.
When Intervention Is Necessary
When a family’s situation cannot be safely resolved through support alone, our department is prepared to involve the courts to ensure protective measures are put in place. These decisions are never made lightly. Removing a child from their home, even temporarily, is always a last resort, pursued only when it is truly necessary to protect their safety and wellbeing.
Strengthening Families for the Future
Wherever possible, our goal is to strengthen families rather than separate them. We believe that with the right support, many families can overcome even serious challenges and provide the safe, nurturing environment every child deserves. Protecting children is not the responsibility of one department alone. It is a shared responsibility across our entire community. At J&IS, we remain committed to ensuring that every child in Sint Maarten has the opportunity to grow up safe, supported, and given every chance to thrive.
