Objective, Mission & Vision ,

Objective
Although placement within a family or foster family is always the preferred option, a residential home is necessary for situations in which this is not immediately possible or appropriate. Some youth require a higher level of structure, supervision, or stabilization due to the severity of their circumstances, immediate safety concerns, or the absence of a suitable foster or network placement. The Youth Residential Home provides a safe and structured environment where these youth can be stabilized, assessed, and supported, while longer-term family-based solutions are explored or prepared.

The J&IS Youth Residential Home aims to ensure that the needs of youth who cannot live with their own families are fully met. In addition to providing food, shelter, ensuring education and opportunities for play and leisure, the Youth Residential Home offers a caring and structured environment where young people can grow, heal, and develop.

The objective of the Youth Residential Home is to:

  • Provide a nurturing and holistic living environment for youth in need.
  • Offer a positive and supportive setting that encourages each young person to grow toward their full potential.
  • Give youth a sense of security, belonging, and stability, similar to that of a family and a home.
  • Provide care, guidance, and structure as youth transition toward adulthood.
  • Ensure that all educational needs of youth are identified and supported.
Ensure that the spiritual needs of youth are respected and supported.
  • Ensure youth participation in recreational activities and, where appropriate, involvement in community activities.
  • Ensure comprehensive care management in accordance with each youth’s individual care plan.
  • Support youth in developing a sense of safety, belonging, self-worth, trust, and understanding in relation to family members and the wider community.
  • Prepare and guide youth toward reintegration into their home environment or society as psychologically healthy and emotionally stable individuals.

Through these objectives, the J&IS Youth Residential Home seeks to provide each young person with the stability, care, and guidance needed to build a safe foundation for personal growth and a successful transition into adulthood.
  • Mission
The mission of the J&IS Youth Residential Home is to provide a safe, stable, and caring environment in which each young person receives protection, guidance, and support. We ensure that every child in our care has access to basic needs, including but not limited to shelter, food, clothing, education, healthcare, and emotional support.
Through structured daily care, positive role models, and individualized support, we aim to promote personal development, resilience, and responsibility, while safeguarding the wellbeing of each youth.
    Vision
Our vision is for young people in our care to grow up in a safe and supportive environment where they feel valued, protected, and understood. We strive for youth to develop into strong, self-sufficient, and emotionally balanced adults who are able to contribute positively to society.
The Youth Residential Home aims to serve as a temporary but meaningful place of stability, growth, and preparation, supporting youth as they build the skills and confidence needed for a successful future.

    Target Group

The Youth Residential Home provides care for male and female youth between the ages of 13 and 18 who are under protective measures and can be supported in an open residential setting. This includes youth who must be removed from their home environment and who are expected to benefit from a structured, caring, and supportive living environment.

Youth placements are referred through Judicial & Institutional Services (J&IS) and the Court of Guardianship.

Youth placed in the Youth Residential Home may have backgrounds that include:

    • Youth at risk.
    • Youth who have been rejected, neglected, abandoned or abused.
    • Youth experiencing immediate crisis situations.

By providing a safe and structured residential setting for these youth, the Youth Residential Home aims to stabilize their situation, address immediate risks, and support their emotional, social, and developmental needs while working toward safe family reunification, placement in a foster family or a stable transition into society.

    Donate

We accept both in-kind and monetary donations that directly benefit children in foster care. The Youth Residential Home is subsidized by the Government of St. Maarten through the Ministry of Justice and by the St. Maarten Development Foundation (SMDF). Nevertheless, additional support and donations remain essential to enhance daily care, educational opportunities, recreational activities, and overall wellbeing for the children and youth in our care.
