Training & Workshops (External)
Judicial & Institutional Services (J&IS) provides a range of behavioral intervention trainings and workshops, including restorative justice practices, as part of its core statutory tasks.
The Purpose of the Foundation
was to provide Probation & Parole, and Family Guardianship services for the Windward Islands: Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius.
SJIB became operational in August 2004 and carried out its duties from its base on Sint Maarten. Following the constitutional changes within the former Netherlands Antilles, SJIB has not been responsible for Saba and Sint Eustatius since October 10, 2010. On that date, both islands became special municipalities of the Netherlands (Caribbean Netherlands, BES) and were placed under the direct responsibility of the Dutch government.
Despite these changes, the working relationship with Saba, Sint Eustatius, Curaçao, Bonaire, and Aruba continued. Cooperation remained in areas such as case transfers, training, and the sharing of knowledge and expertise.
Over the years, SJIB grew from a small team into a strong and established organization, steadily expanding its services, capacity, and professional expertise. The foundation expanded its services by establishing the Foster Families Central in August 2009 and opening a Residential Home for Youth in June 2022. Through the implementation of many new projects and programs, the organization also developed new products and services that strengthened its role in supporting the target group and the justice chain.
On June 28, 2024, the organization began a rebranding process, which included a name change to Judicial and Institutional Services, and introduced several reforms to strengthen probation and family guardianship services. These efforts aim to support public safety, help offenders make positive changes, ensure children can grow safely, and contribute to healing and restoring the community.
Today, J&IS holds a crucial position within the judicial system and has become an essential part of the justice landscape on St. Maarten. These Trainings Are Aimed At Promoting Positive Behavior Change, Strengthening Accountability, Repairing Harm, And Supporting Safer Schools, Organizations, And Communities.
